Along with his friend George Whitney Calhoun, he started the Green Bay Packers in 1919. Lambeau was a star player at the halfback position. This was a top role in the early days of the league. He was the main person running and passing the ball. In 77 games, he accounted for 35 touchdowns. He even won a championship as a player-coach in 1929.

Being a leader meant Lambeau had many different jobs to do. In the beginning, he was the team captain. He also became the first head coach and general manager. In those early years, coaches could not talk to players during games. This meant Lambeau had to lead and call plays on the field. He also ran practices and signed new players for the team. From 1920 to 1949, he had almost total control over the Packers. He managed the daily work that kept the team running.
