While he was a decent player, he was not a star on the field. He played for many different clubs like Grimsby Town and Tottenham Hotspur. Often, he worked as an amateur to keep a regular job. He even studied mining engineering at Sheffield Technical College. His career as a player was quite ordinary compared to his later success. He mostly played for smaller teams and did not win major trophies. However, his time playing helped him learn the game deeply.

As a manager, Chapman changed how football was played through smart new ideas.

He created a special way to set up players called the WM formation. This system used a strong defense to help the team attack quickly. He also introduced many modern things we see today. He used floodlighting so games could be played at night. He was one of the first to put numbers on player shirts. He even brought in physiotherapists to help keep his players healthy. These changes made his teams work like a well-oiled machine.

Chapman's journey into managing began at Northampton Town in 1907.
