He was a right-handed batsman who played for Yorkshire and England. People loved watching him because he was very focused and determined. He was especially good at batting on "bad wickets." This means the ground was not smooth or easy to play on. His strong defense helped his teams stay safe during hard matches.

To become a great player, Sutcliffe worked very hard on his skills. He practiced a special way to use his leg pads to block the ball. This technique helped prevent the ball from hitting the wicket. His coach, Steve Doughty, taught him this important skill. This training helped Sutcliffe play well even when the pitch was difficult. He learned how to defend himself when bowlers used "swing" to move the ball.

Sutcliffe's journey started in Yorkshire, where he was born in 1894. His father was a keen cricket player, which likely inspired him. As a young boy, he worked as a "clicker" making boots. Later, he worked in a textile mill and learned bookkeeping. This skill helped him later in life when he became a businessman. He even opened his own sportswear shop in Leeds.
