He was an opening batsman for both Yorkshire and the England national team. An opening batsman is a player who starts the game at the very beginning. Sutcliffe was famous for his intense concentration and his incredible determination. These qualities made him a master at batting in adverse conditions. He was known as one of the finest "bad wicket batsmen" in history. This means he could play well even when the pitch was uneven or difficult.

Sutcliffe developed a very specific technical style to protect his wicket. His coach, Steve Doughty, emphasized the importance of pad play. This technique involves using the protective pads on a player's legs to intercept the ball. It helps prevent the ball from hitting the stumps. Doughty's method was controversial among some of Sutcliffe's colleagues. However, Sutcliffe believed it was necessary because of the development of swing bowling. Swing bowling is a method where the ball curves in the air. Sutcliffe learned that a strong defense was the only way to survive such bowling.

His journey to greatness began in Summerbridge, Yorkshire, in 1894. His father, Willie Sutcliffe, was a keen club cricketer. This family connection likely sparked Herbert's early interest in the sport. His childhood involved significant challenges and changes. His father died in 1898, and his mother died in 1904 when he was nine. He was raised by his aunts in a house that contained a bakery. Before his cricket career took off, he worked as a "clicker" in a boot factory. He later worked in a textile mill where he learned bookkeeping. This professional skill allowed him to become a successful businessman later in life.

Sutcliffe's professional career was interrupted by the First World War. He served in the military, including time with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He eventually became a Second Lieutenant in the Green Howards. He played cricket for an officer cadet battalion while stationed in Scotland. After the war, he returned to Yorkshire and made his first-class debut in 1919. That season, he formed a massive partnership with Percy Holmes. They shared five century partnerships in a single season. Their success helped Yorkshire win the County Championship for the tenth time.

Statistically, Sutcliffe remains one of the most successful Test batsmen in history. He played in 54 Test matches for England. He was the very first cricketer to score 16 centuries in Test match cricket. A century is a score of at least 100 runs in a single innings. His career batting average was an impressive 60.73. This is the highest average for any English batsman. Globally, he ranks sixth among Test batsmen with at least 20 completed innings. He sits behind legends like Don Bradman and Kamindu Mendis.

Sutcliffe is perhaps most famous for his legendary partnership with Jack Hobbs. They opened the batting together for England between 1924 and 1930.

Many experts regard the Hobbs and Sutcliffe duo as the greatest partnership of all time. He also formed successful partnerships with Percy Holmes and the young Len Hutton. During his long career, Yorkshire won the County Championship 12 times. His 1932–33 tour of Australia included the famous "bodyline" series. While some friends felt he did not approve of the tactic, he showed fierce loyalty to his captain, Douglas Jardine.

Beyond the cricket pitch, Sutcliffe was a man of many roles. He used his earnings to establish a successful sportswear shop in Leeds. After his playing days ended, he remained deeply involved in the sport. He served on the Yorkshire club committee for 21 years. He also spent three years as a selector for the England Test team. His contributions to the game have earned him many honors. There are special gates named after him at Headingley. He has also been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
