He is recognized as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the sport. Hobbs played for Surrey from 1905 until 1934. He also represented England in 61 Test matches between 1908 and 1930. His statistical achievements in first-class cricket remain unmatched. He holds the record for the most runs scored at 61,760. He also holds the record for the most centuries, with 199 total.

Hobbs' success relied on a highly technical and adaptable style of play. He was a right-handed batsman who utilized exceptionally fast footwork to reach the ball. He possessed the ability to play a wide variety of different shots. This allowed him to excel at the placement of the ball into open spaces. He was also an occasional right-arm medium-pace bowler. Additionally, he was a skilled fielder, particularly when playing in the cover point position.

His batting technique was defined by its ability to handle changing styles of bowling. Early in his career, he became one of the first batsmen to successfully play against googly bowlers. A googly is a type of delivery that turns in an unexpected direction. Hobbs adapted by mixing classical, traditional shots with an effective defensive technique. He was especially successful when playing on difficult, unpredictable pitches. As an opening batsman, he often faced "ruthless" bowlers on hostile pitches that lacked modern safety regulations.

Hobbs' career was marked by significant partnerships with other great players. He established several effective opening partnerships for Surrey with Tom Hayward and Andy Sandham. For the England national team, he partnered with Wilfred Rhodes and Herbert Sutcliffe. His partnership with Sutcliffe is particularly notable in the history of the sport. Even as of 2022, their partnership remains the highest average for a first-wicket pair in Test history by a wide margin.

His journey to greatness began in a state of near poverty in Cambridge. Born on 16 December 1882, he was the eldest of 12 children.

His early batting was considered undistinguished by coaches. To support his family, he worked as an errand boy and a domestic servant. He also served as an apprentice gas fitter. He practiced his skills on Parker's Piece, a common grassland in Cambridge. A major breakthrough occurred in 1901 when his batting improved suddenly, leading to his first century.

Professional opportunities arrived through connections and persistence. In 1902, the England batsman Tom Hayward helped Hobbs secure a trial with Surrey. To meet the qualification rules for the County Championship, Hobbs moved to the Surrey area of London. He made his first-class debut in 1905, scoring 88 runs in his first innings. By the 1911–12 Test series against Australia, he scored three centuries. This performance led critics to judge him as the best batsman in the world.

Throughout his life, Hobbs managed both his sporting and personal responsibilities. He served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. After the war, he faced health challenges when appendicitis caused him to miss most of the 1921 season. This illness forced him to adopt a more cautious and consistent style of play. To ensure financial stability, he opened a sporting goods shop in 1921. He ran this business for nearly the rest of his life.

His legacy is cemented by his historical status and honors. In 1953, he became the first professional cricketer to be knighted. He was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century. This prestigious list included other legends like Sir Donald Bradman and Sir Garfield Sobers. Hobbs lived a long life, remaining very close to his wife, Ada, for 56 years. He died in 1963 at the age of 81, just a few months after her.
