Before he led teams, Clough was a star player. He played as a striker, which is a player who scores goals. He played for Middlesbrough and Sunderland. He was incredibly good at scoring. He scored 251 league goals in 274 matches. This makes him one of the highest scorers in the history of the Football League. He even played for the England national team twice in 1959. However, a serious knee injury in 1963 changed his life. This injury forced him to retire from playing when he was only 29 years old.

Clough's path to management began with a special partnership. In 1965, he became the manager of Hartlepools United. He was only 30 years old at the time. He asked Peter Taylor to be his assistant manager. This was the start of a famous duo that lasted for many years. They worked together at several different clubs during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. They even faced hard times at Hartlepools when the club had very little money. Clough even went to local pubs to help raise money for the team.

Together, Clough and Taylor achieved amazing things with Derby County and Nottingham Forest.
