Many people believe he was the greatest all-rounder in cricket history. An all-rounder is a player who is excellent at both batting and bowling. Miller was a powerful hitter who could strike the ball with great force. Once, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, he hit a six so high it was still rising when it hit the grandstand.

He was also a clever bowler who liked to surprise the batsmen. He would change his speed or his run-up to keep them guessing. He was even a great fielder who could make acrobatic catches in the slips.

Miller was also a very talented Australian rules footballer.

He played for the St Kilda club and even represented the state of Victoria. In 1941, he played 50 games for St Kilda. During one match against North Melbourne, he kicked eight goals. He was known as a strong defender who used his running ability to help his team. His skills on the football field were just as impressive as his skills on the cricket pitch. This made him a star in many different types of sports.

Miller's journey started in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine.

He was born on November 28, 1919, to Leslie and Edith Miller. As a young boy, he was quite small for his age. This meant he had to work hard on his technique rather than using power. At age 12, he was picked for a Victorian schoolboys cricket team. Even though he was short, he impressed people with his style. He even thought about becoming a jockey before he grew much taller.

His life changed a lot during World War II.

Miller joined the Royal Australian Air Force as a pilot. He trained in South Australia and then sailed to Europe. While he was in England, he even played for a RAAF cricket team. This was a difficult time, as some of his friends were lost in an air strike. After the war, he returned to cricket and became a member of the "Invincibles." This was a famous Australian team that did not lose any matches.

People loved Miller because of his bold and fun personality.

He was often called "Nugget" or "the golden boy." He loved the excitement of the game more than just winning. This rebellious spirit made him a favorite with the crowds. Because of his amazing career, he became one of the first members of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. Today, a statue of him and his teacher, Bill Woodfull, stands at Melbourne High School.
