Lombardi's life began in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. His parents, Enrico and Matilda, came from Southern Italy. Vince was the oldest of five children in his family. As a young boy, he helped his father at a meat cutting business. He also served as an altar boy at St. Mark Catholic Church.

Growing up in a diverse neighborhood, he learned the value of hard work and family. Even when faced with unfair treatment because of his Italian heritage, he stayed focused on his goals.

He learned a lot about toughness while playing college football. At Fordham University, he was a member of the Seven Blocks of Granite. This was the nickname for the team's strong offensive line. Lombardi played as a right guard in 1936. During one game against Pitt, he suffered a bad injury and lost several teeth. This difficult moment taught him a lesson he never forgot. He learned to always respect and never underestimate his opponent. He graduated from Fordham in June 1937.

Before reaching the top, Lombardi worked many different jobs. He coached at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey for eight years. He also spent five seasons coaching at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. At West Point, he worked under coach Earl "Colonel Red" Blaik. This time helped him create his famous coaching style based on discipline and execution. Later, he joined the New York Giants as an assistant coach. There, he introduced a new strategy called "rule blocking." This allowed players to run toward open space, which he called "running to daylight."

Lombardi's career was filled with amazing numbers and records. He became the head coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1959. He never had a losing season while coaching in the NFL. His regular-season winning percentage was 73.8 percent. In the postseason, his winning percentage was even higher at 90 percent. He finished with 105 total wins in the NFL. Because of his great skill, he was put into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, the NFL Super Bowl trophy is named in his honor to remember his legacy.
