Lambeau helped shape the early identity of the National Football League (NFL). His influence spanned several decades of the sport's development. He remains one of the most successful coaches in league history.

As a player, Lambeau operated as a halfback. In the early era of football, this was a premier position. He played in a single wing offensive formation. This setup allowed him to act as the team's primary runner and passer. During his 77 games, he accounted for 35 total touchdowns. This total included 8 rushing touchdowns, 3 receiving touchdowns, and 24 passing touchdowns. He was also a versatile kicker. He successfully converted six field goals and 20 extra points.

Lambeau's leadership roles evolved through several distinct stages. He began as the team captain during the inaugural 1919 season. In 1920, he became a player-coach. During this era, head coaches were prohibited from communicating with players during games. Consequently, Lambeau acted as the on-field leader and play-caller. From 1920 to 1949, he held the titles of head coach and general manager. He maintained near-total control over the team's daily operations and personnel decisions.

His journey began in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he was born on April 9, 1898. He was a standout athlete at Green Bay East High School. He later attended the University of Notre Dame. However, a severe case of tonsillitis forced him to leave the university in 1919. After recovering, he worked as a shipping clerk at the Indian Packing Company. On August 11, 1919, Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun founded the Packers. The team name was suggested by Lambeau's girlfriend, Agnes Aylward. The Acme Packing Company eventually purchased the naming rights.

Lambeau's coaching record is defined by immense success and significant milestones. He led the Packers to six NFL championships. These titles were won in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, and 1944. His three consecutive titles from 1929 to 1931 were particularly notable. He is tied with George Halas and Bill Belichick for the most NFL championships by a coach.

Over his 33-year career, he earned an official coaching record of 229–134–22. He also coached eight players who were later elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Innovation was a key part of Lambeau's tenure. He utilized talented players like quarterback Arnie Herber and split end Don Hutson. Together, they revolutionized the use of the passing game. This tactical shift allowed the Packers to dominate competitors throughout the 1930s. Lambeau also attempted to modernize training. In 1946, he purchased Rockwood Lodge to create a self-contained training facility. This was the first of its kind in professional football. However, the facility was controversial due to its $32,000 price tag and hard limestone fields.

Despite his success, Lambeau faced difficult transitions later in life. After a dispute with the Packers' board of directors, he left Green Bay. He coached the Chicago Cardinals and the Washington Redskins for two seasons each. He eventually retired from coaching in 1953.
