Brown revolutionized the mechanics of how football teams operate. He was the first coach to utilize game film to scout opposing teams. This allowed coaches to study movements and strategies visually. He also pioneered the use of a full-time staff of assistant coaches. To ensure his players understood his complex strategies, he tested them on their knowledge of the playbook. The playbook is a detailed document listing various formations and set plays.

Massillon was a steel and shipping town with a deep obsession with football. Brown grew up in a household where his father worked for the railroad. As a youth, Brown was quite small, weighing less than 150 pounds. Because of his size, he initially focused on pole vaulting. However, his coach, Dave Stewart, noticed his determination. Brown became the starting quarterback for Massillon Washington High School in 1924. He later played at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned All-Ohio honors.

Brown's coaching career began at Severn School in Maryland in 1930. He led the team to an undefeated season and a state championship. In 1932, he returned to his hometown to coach the Massillon Tigers. He transformed a mediocre program into a powerhouse through strict discipline. He implemented an offense and blocking scheme focused on quickness rather than raw strength. Between 1935 and 1940, his Massillon teams won five state championships. They also won four High School Football National Championships. During this era, his teams outscored opponents by a massive margin of 2,393 to 168 points.

In 1941, Brown moved to the collegiate level at Ohio State University. He was hired to replace Francis Schmidt and immediately applied his rigorous systems. He focused heavily on preparing freshmen to replace graduating seniors. In 1942, he led the Buckeyes to their first-ever national championship. This success came despite the challenges of World War II. During the war, Brown served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He coached the Bluejackets at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station.

Brown's professional success with the Cleveland Browns was historic. He led the team to win all four AAFC championships. When the team joined the NFL in 1950, they won the league championship that same year. They also won NFL titles in 1954 and 1955. However, his tenure in Cleveland ended in January 1963. He was fired following a power struggle with owner Art Modell. This conflict arose because Brown often made major personnel decisions without consulting the owner. Additionally, Brown was known for a strict and controlling style. This often caused friction with players who wanted more input on play-calling.

Despite his difficult personality, Brown's social impact was significant. He played a key role in breaking the professional football color barrier. He brought the first African-American players into the modern era of professional football. One such player was Bill Willis, who played under Brown.
