Cochran was born in 1937 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was the great-grandson of a person who had been enslaved. His family moved to Los Angeles during the Great Migration. This was a period when many Black families moved to the West Coast. He attended local schools and graduated first in his class from Los Angeles High School in 1955. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA in 1959. He completed his Juris Doctor at Loyola Law School in 1962.

His legal career followed several distinct stages. First, he served as a deputy city attorney in Los Angeles. In this role, he handled misdemeanor battery and drunk driving cases. In 1965, he entered private practice with Gerald Lenoir. He later opened his own firm, Cochran, Atkins & Evans, in 1966. A major turning point occurred when he represented a widow named Leonard Deadwyler. Although he lost that case, he saw how it galvanized the minority community. In 1978, he returned to government work as First Assistant District Attorney.

Cochran eventually returned to private practice to build a massive legal empire. He opened the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. law firm. This firm grew into The Cochran Firm. It eventually expanded to include regional offices in fifteen different states. He became very wealthy through his successful practice. By 2001, his accountant estimated his wealth could reach between 25 and 50 million dollars. He owned luxury cars and homes in Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and Manhattan.

He is most famous for leading the "Dream Team" during the O.J. Simpson murder trial. This trial lasted nearly nine months in 1995. Cochran used a specific strategy to argue that the prosecution lacked proof. He used the famous phrase, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." This referred to a bloody glove found at the crime scene. The phrase helped persuade the jury to acquit Simpson of the murders. This trial made Cochran a much more polarized figure in the media.

Cochran represented a wide variety of clients. He worked for famous figures like Michael Jackson and Sean Combs. He also defended individuals like Stanley Tookie Williams and Snoop Dogg. However, he also championed the "underdog." He famously represented Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant. Louima was mistreated by a police officer in Brooklyn. Cochran helped secure an $8.75 million settlement for him. This was the largest police brutality settlement in New York City history.

Cochran’s work connected the legal system to broader social issues. He often argued that police racism affected how evidence was handled. He believed in defending those without fame or wealth. He called these people the "No Js." He viewed his victory for Geronimo Pratt as his most glorious moment. He died in 2005 at the age of 67. His death followed a battle with a brain tumor. His legacy remains tied to the fight for civil rights and legal reform.
