Marion Hugh "Suge" Knight Jr. was a powerful and controversial figure in the American music industry. As the co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records, he helped drive the massive commercial success of gangsta rap during the 1990s. Knight aimed to build a music empire that would become the "Motown of the '90s." This goal meant creating a dominant record label that could shape the culture of hip-hop. However, his career was also defined by intense legal battles and allegations of using intimidation to achieve business goals.

Before entering the music business, Knight was a dedicated athlete. He played college football at El Camino College from 1983 to 1985. He then transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he played defensive end for two years. Although he did not graduate from UNLV, his athletic skills led to a brief stint in the NFL. During the 1987 NFL players strike, Knight served as a replacement player for the Los Angeles Rams. He appeared in two games for the team before moving into roles as a bodyguard and concert promoter.

Knight's path to music executive status involved several business steps. He first formed a music publishing company in 1989. He earned a significant profit when Vanilla Ice agreed to sign over royalties from the hit "Ice Ice Baby." This occurred because the song allegedly included material written by Knight's client, Mario Johnson. Knight also managed artists like DJ Quik and The D.O.C. Through these connections, he eventually met members of the influential rap group N.W.A. This network provided the foundation for his most famous venture.

In 1991, Knight co-founded Death Row Records alongside Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. The label's rise was incredibly rapid and successful. Dr. Dre released his solo debut, *The Chronic*, in 1992, which earned triple platinum status in the United States by 1993. Shortly after, Snoop Dogg released *Doggystyle* in 1993, reaching quadruple platinum certification by 1994. Knight also secured a major distribution deal with Interscope. These massive sales figures established Death Row as a central force in West Coast hip-hop.

Despite this success, the label's reputation became increasingly troubled. Many people alleged that Knight used violence and intimidation in his professional dealings. In 1995, Knight made a major move by posting $1.4 million in bail for rapper Tupac Shakur. This allowed Shakur to leave prison pending an appeal, and he subsequently signed with Death Row. Under the label, Shakur released the highly successful album *All Eyez on Me* in 1996. However, tragedy struck in September 1996 in Las Vegas. A shooting occurred while Knight was driving, resulting in injuries to Knight and the death of Shakur.

Following the death of Shakur, the stability of Death Row Records collapsed. Dr. Dre left the label in March 1996 to form Aftermath Entertainment. Snoop Dogg departed approximately two years later. The label's decline was accelerated by various feuds and legal pressures. Knight had been involved in public disagreements with East Coast executive Sean Combs. He also faced criticism from activists like C. Delores Tucker, who campaigned against the glamorization of gangsta lifestyles. These conflicts contributed to the loss of lucrative business deals, such as one with Time Warner.

Knight's personal history is marked by several periods of incarceration. From the late 1990s to the early 2000s, he served time for assault convictions and parole violations. In September 2018, Knight reached a legal resolution regarding a 2015 incident. He pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter following a fatal hit-and-run accident. Because of this conviction and his previous felony record, California's "three-strikes law" was applied. This resulted in a 28-year prison sentence. He is currently eligible for parole in October 2034, at which time he will be 69 years old.
