He helped make gangsta rap a huge commercial success during the 1990s. Knight was the co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records. He wanted his company to be the "Motown of the '90s." This meant he wanted it to be a top music label. Many famous artists found success while working with him. His work changed how people heard hip-hop music.

Before he led a music company, Knight was an athlete. He played college football at El Camino College and UNLV. He played as a defensive end for two years at UNLV. In 1987, he even played two games for the Los Angeles Rams. He was a replacement player during an NFL strike. Later, he worked as a bodyguard for singers like Bobby Brown. He also worked as a concert promoter to learn the business.

Knight helped build Death Row Records with Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. in 1991. The label became very famous very quickly. Dr. Dre released his solo album, The Chronic, in 1992. This album earned triple platinum status in the United States. Then, Snoop Dogg released his debut album, Doggystyle, in 1993. That album reached quadruple platinum status by 1994. These big hits made the label a leader in music.

However, the label faced many hard times and serious problems. Some people said Knight used violence or intimidation in his business. In 1995, Knight paid $1.4 million in bail to free Tupac Shakur from prison. Shakur then signed with Death Row and released the successful album All Eyez on Me. Sadly, a shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996 injured Knight and killed Shakur. After this, many famous artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg left the company.

Knight has faced many legal battles throughout his life. He spent time in prison for assault convictions in the late 1990s. In September 2018, he pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. This was for a fatal hit-and-run accident that happened in 2015. Because of his past, he received a 28-year prison sentence. He is eligible for parole in October 2034. He will be 69 years old at that time.
