He is widely considered one of the greatest fighters in history. Leonard competed professionally from 1977 until 1997. During this long career, he won world titles in five different weight classes. He also won the lineal championship in three weight classes. Most notably, he captured the undisputed welterweight championship. Leonard was a central figure in a famous group called the "Four Kings." This group included Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. They all fought one another throughout the 1980s. Leonard was the only member of this group to defeat the other three.

His path to greatness began in the amateur boxing ranks. Leonard started training at the Palmer Park Recreation Center in 1969. His older brother, Roger, helped establish the boxing program there. A coach once described the young boy as "sweet as sugar." This comment eventually led to his famous nickname, Sugar Ray. Leonard's amateur career was filled with many significant victories. He won the National Golden Gloves and the US National Championships. In 1976, he joined a highly talented U.S. Olympic boxing team. Many people believe this was the greatest Olympic boxing team in history.

Leonard reached the peak of amateur boxing at the 1976 Summer Olympics. He competed as a light welterweight representative for the United States. In the final match, he faced the Cuban fighter Andrés Aldama. Aldama was a famous knockout artist who had won five straight knockouts. Leonard fought a tactical match against him. He landed several strong left hooks in the first round. In the second round, Leonard dropped Aldama with a left to the chin. Leonard eventually won a 5–0 decision to earn the Olympic gold medal. He finished his amateur career with an impressive record of 165 wins and 5 losses.

Life changed quickly for Leonard after his Olympic success. He faced several difficult personal challenges at the same time. His high school girlfriend, Juanita Wilkinson, informed him she was pregnant. Leonard pledged to support his son, Ray Charles Leonard Jr. Additionally, his father was hospitalized with meningitis. His mother also suffered a heart attack. These events made it difficult for his parents to work. Because of these responsibilities, Leonard decided to turn professional to earn money. He could no longer pursue his original plan to study business at the University of Maryland.

To launch his professional career, Leonard used a unique financial strategy. An attorney named Mike Trainer helped him secure funding. Trainer convinced 24 friends and clients to invest $21,000 in Leonard's career. This was an investment that had to be repaid with 8% interest within four years. Leonard became the sole stockholder of his own company, Sugar Ray Leonard, Inc. He also hired the famous trainer Angelo Dundee. Dundee managed Leonard's opponents and training. However, Dundee only took 15% of Leonard's purse. This was much lower than the traditional 33% manager fee. Leonard made his professional debut in February 1977 in Baltimore. He defeated Luis Vega and used his first paycheck to repay his $21,000 loan.

Leonard's professional rise was marked by incredible skill and high earnings. He was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in total purses. In 1979, he fought for his first major world title. He faced Wilfred Benítez for the WBC Welterweight Championship in Las Vegas. The match took place in front of a capacity crowd of 4,600 people. It was a highly competitive and tactical battle between two champions. Leonard won the fight, earning a $1 million purse. He was later named the "Boxer of the Decade" for the 1980s. Various organizations, including The Ring magazine, named him Fighter of the Year multiple times.

Beyond the boxing ring, Leonard has found success in other fields. He has worked as a professional boxing analyst. He also became an actor in various television shows and films. His credits include appearances in "Half & Half," "L.A. Heat," and the movie "The Fighter." His legacy in sports remains very strong. In 2002, The Ring voted him the ninth greatest fighter of the last 80 years. By 2016, he was voted the greatest living fighter. His career shows how a dedicated athlete can influence both sports and entertainment.
