He earned nicknames like "the Hitman" and the "Motor City Cobra." Hearns was famous for his tall, slender build. He possessed long arms and broad shoulders. These physical traits allowed him to move through many weight classes. He became the first boxer in history to win world titles in five different weight divisions. These divisions included welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight. He even captured an IBO title at cruiserweight later in his career.

Boxing requires immense skill and specific physical training. Hearns began his professional career in Detroit, Michigan, in 1977. He trained under the guidance of Emanuel Steward. Steward was a crucial figure in Hearns's development. He transformed Hearns from a light-hitting amateur into a devastating puncher. Hearns had a very impressive amateur record of 155 wins and 8 losses. In 1977, he won both the National Amateur Athletic Union and the National Golden Gloves titles. This foundation led to a professional start where he knocked out his first 17 opponents.

Hearns's career was defined by several historic and high-stakes matches. In 1980, he defeated José "Pipino" Cuevas to end a four-year reign. This victory earned him the "Fighter of the Year" award from Ring magazine. In 1981, he faced Sugar Ray Leonard in a match called "The Showdown." This bout unified the World Welterweight Championship. The fight was a massive financial event for the era. The two fighters earned a combined 17 million dollars. This was the largest purse in sports history at that time.

Another major era of Hearns's career involved the light middleweight division. In December 1982, he won the WBC Super Welterweight title from Wilfred Benítez. He defended this title against several opponents, including Luigi Minchillo and Mark Medal. His most famous victory at this weight was against Roberto Durán. Hearns knocked out Durán in just two rounds. This achievement is often considered his pinnacle. It earned him his second "Fighter of the Year" award in 1984.

In 1985, Hearns participated in a legendary battle against Marvin Hagler. This fight was billed as "The War." It is often described as containing the three greatest rounds in boxing history. During the first round, Hearns broke his right hand. Despite this injury, he managed to cause a deep cut on Hagler's forehead. Hearns had to change his strategy to use lateral movement and a jab. Eventually, Hagler caught him with a heavy right hand in the third round. Although Hearns lost, the fight elevated both men to superstar status.

Hearns continued to find success across different weight classes. In 1987, he won the WBC light-heavyweight title by scoring six knockdowns against Dennis Andries. Later that year, he won the vacant WBC middleweight title by defeating Juan Roldán. He then became the first boxer to hold titles in five weight divisions by winning the inaugural WBO super-middleweight title in 1988. He also achieved a sixth world title in 1991 by outboxing Virgil Hill.
