Angelo Dundee was a highly respected American boxing trainer and cornerman. A cornerman is a person who stays in the corner of the ring during a match to assist a boxer. Dundee was known for his skill and his honorable character in a sport that was often corrupt. He worked with 15 different world boxing champions throughout his long career. These champions included famous names like George Foreman and Sugar Ray Leonard.

His reputation was so strong that the announcer Howard Cosell once said he would only let Dundee train his own son.

Being a boxing trainer involves many specific responsibilities. A trainer prepares an athlete for their matches through rigorous training sessions. During a fight, the cornerman watches the action from the corner of the ring. They provide advice, encouragement, and physical support between rounds. Dundee was famous for shouting instructions to his fighters to help them win. For example, during a fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns, Dundee shouted, "You're blowing it, son!" This advice helped Leonard eventually win the match in the fourteenth round.

Dundee worked with many different types of elite athletes. He managed legendary heavyweight champions and smaller, faster fighters. He saw Sugar Ray Leonard as a smaller version of Muhammad Ali. He also worked with fighters like José Nápoles, Willie Pastrano, and Luis Manuel Rodríguez. Later in his career, he teamed up with George Foreman for major title fights. These matches included Foreman's 1991 fight against Evander Holyfield and his 1994 win against Michael Moorer.

His career is most closely linked to the life of Muhammad Ali. Dundee began training the young Cassius Clay, who later became Ali, during his early bouts. He was the cornerman for nearly all of Ali's famous fights. This included the victory against Sonny Liston to win the heavyweight title. He was also there for many of Ali's later matches against Joe Frazier and George Foreman. During the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle," Foreman accused Dundee of loosening the ring ropes. This was allegedly to help Ali use his "rope-a-dope" technique. Dundee always denied these claims of tampering.

Before becoming a world-famous trainer, Dundee had a very different early life. He was born Angelo Mirena on August 30, 1921, in Philadelphia. His parents were recent immigrants from Italy. His father worked as a railway construction worker. In the 1940s, he changed his surname to Dundee to honor a champion boxer named Johnny Dundee. During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic and was deployed to England from 1944 to 1945.

After the war ended in 1945, Dundee moved to New York City to start his career. He began as an apprentice at Stillman's Gym, where his job was a "bucket-guy." He eventually moved to Miami Beach, Florida, to work at the Fifth Street Gym. This gym was owned by his brother, Chris Dundee. His first major success as a cornerman came in 1955 with Carmen Basilio. Basilio defeated Tony DeMarco to win the world welterweight crown. Dundee also helped Sugar Ray Robinson win the World Middleweight Crown in 1957.

In his later years, Dundee's expertise reached beyond the boxing ring and into Hollywood. In 2005, he was hired to train actor Russell Crowe. Crowe was playing the character James J. Braddock in the film *Cinderella Man*. Dundee even appeared in the movie as a character named "Angelo." His life and career have been depicted in several other films. These include *The Greatest* in 1977 and *Ali* in 2001. He was also featured in the 2020 film *One Night in Miami*.
