Bernard Hopkins is a former American professional boxer celebrated for his incredible longevity and defensive skill. He competed in the ring from 1988 until 2016. Throughout his career, he held multiple world championships across two different weight classes. He was most famous for his time as the undisputed middleweight champion. This means he held all the major titles available in that division at once.

To succeed, Hopkins used a highly strategic and defensive fighting style. He was a master of the Philly Shell, which is a specific way of positioning the arms to protect the body and head. He combined this defense with counterpunching, which involves hitting an opponent immediately after they miss a strike. He also possessed significant speed and power. Hopkins often used his experience to manage difficult situations, such as fighting in a clinch. A clinch is when two fighters hold onto each other to stop the action. He credited his long career to mastering these fundamental boxing basics.

Hopkins achieved historic milestones by winning titles from the four major sanctioning bodies. These organizations include the WBA, the WBC, the IBF, and the WBO. In 2004, he defeated Oscar De La Hoya to win the WBO title. This victory made him the first male boxer to hold titles from all four major bodies at the same time. This achievement cemented his status as an undisputed champion. His skill was so respected that The Ring magazine ranked him as one of the ten best middleweight titleholders of the last 50 years.

His journey to greatness began with a very difficult personal history. Hopkins grew up in the Raymond Rosen housing project in Philadelphia. While he was a successful amateur boxer at age nine, he later turned to crime. He was sentenced to 18 years in Graterford Prison for nine felonies. During his time in prison, he witnessed a murder during an argument over cigarettes. However, he also rediscovered his passion for boxing while incarcerated. After being released in 1988, he converted to Islam and used boxing to escape his past life.

In the middleweight division, Hopkins faced many legendary opponents. In 2001, he entered a tournament to unify the division. He defeated Keith Holmes to win the WBC title. Later that year, he fought Félix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden. Although he was considered an underdog, Hopkins won by a stoppage in the 12th round. This victory made him the first undisputed middleweight champion since Marvin Hagler in 1987. He was subsequently named Fighter of the Year by both The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.

After losing his middleweight titles to Jermain Taylor in 2005, Hopkins made a bold move. At age 41, he moved up to the light heavyweight division. In 2006, he defeated Antonio Tarver to win the IBO and Ring titles. He continued to break records as he aged. At age 46, he defeated Jean Pascal to win the WBC and lineal light heavyweight titles. This made him the oldest boxer in history to win a world championship. He broke the previous record held by George Foreman, who had set it in 1994.

Hopkins continued to defy expectations well into his late forties. In 2013, at age 48, he won the IBF light heavyweight title from Tavoris Cloud. He won the WBA Super title from Beibut Shumenov in 2014 at age 49. These victories proved his ability to compete at an elite level despite his advanced age.
