He is most famous for achieving the status of undisputed champion in two different weight classes. In boxing, being "undisputed" means a fighter holds the major titles from all four primary sanctioning bodies. These organizations are the World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and the World Boxing Organization (WBO). Usyk is the first male boxer to become a three-time undisputed champion during the current "four-belt era." This era is defined by the existence of these four major championship belts.

Usyk's success relies on a specific set of technical boxing skills. He is widely recognized for his superior footwork and high hand speed. A central part of his strategy is the use of a "spearing jab," which is a quick, straight punch used to control distance. He also utilizes accurate combinations, or sequences of punches, to break down his opponents. During his professional rise, he frequently used these tools to dominate his matches. In one notable bout against Thabiso Mchunu, he used these combinations to score multiple knockdowns. He also demonstrated power with an uppercut, a punch that travels upward toward the opponent's chin.

His career can be divided into two distinct stages: his amateur years and his professional career. As an amateur, Usyk competed for medals and experience rather than prize money. He built an incredible record of 335 wins and only 15 losses. In the professional stage, he fights for world titles and significant earnings. He began his professional journey in late 2013 at the age of 26. He initially competed in the cruiserweight division, which is a specific weight category for boxers. Later, he moved up to the heavyweight division to challenge the largest and strongest fighters in the world.

Usyk's journey toward greatness began with a foundation in other sports. Born in Simferopol on 17 January 1987, he spent his early years playing football. He trained at a specialized sports school for Olympic reserves until he was 15 years old. In 2002, he made the pivotal decision to switch his focus to boxing. His path was not always easy, as he once battled life-threatening pneumonia during his second year of university. Despite this, he rose through the amateur ranks to win gold medals at the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 London Olympics.

His professional rise is marked by several historic championship victories. In 2016, he defeated Krzysztof Głowacki to win the WBO cruiserweight title. This win ended a long streak of knockout victories but proved his ability to win through technical skill. In 2021, he moved to the heavyweight division and defeated Anthony Joshua to claim the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles. A major milestone occurred in May 2024 when he defeated Tyson Fury to win the WBC title. This victory made him the undisputed heavyweight champion. In July 2025, he defeated Daniel Dubois to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

Usyk's dominance is reflected in significant statistics and global rankings. He is the first boxer since Evander Holyfield in 1990 to become undisputed in both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. His financial success is also immense due to his high-profile matches. In February 2025, Sportico ranked him as the 7th highest-paid athlete of 2024, with an estimated income of $122 million. Forbes also recognized his earnings, placing him at number 11 among the highest-paid athletes in the world in May 2025, with an estimated $101 million.

Beyond the ring, Usyk is a symbol of national pride and athletic excellence. He has been honored with the Order of Merit, 1st Class of Ukraine. His ability to navigate the complexities of the "four-belt era" connects him to the history of boxing legends. He is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, who was stripped of his title in April 2000. By mastering different weight classes and maintaining success across decades, Usyk has integrated himself into the broader history of combat sports and global athletics.
