Klitschko used a very specific set of skills to win his fights. He was a strategic and intelligent boxer who relied on more than just strength. He used a powerful jab and a straight right hand to control his opponents. He also utilized a quick left hook to score knockouts. While many heavyweights are slow, Klitschko had unusual athletic footwork and mobility. He also used his physical strength effectively when clinching with other fighters.

Klitschko's fighting style changed significantly during his career. After suffering knockout losses in 2003 and 2004, he hired trainer Emanuel Steward. This partnership lasted eight years until Steward passed away in 2012. Steward helped Klitschko transition from an aggressive puncher to a defensively-oriented boxer. This change helped him maintain his dominance for many years. He regained the IBF and IBO titles in 2006 by defeating Chris Byrd in a rematch.
