He currently serves as the mayor of Kyiv, which is the capital city of Ukraine. Klitschko's life is defined by two major, successful careers in very different fields. He first gained global fame through his dominance in the heavyweight boxing division. Later, he transitioned into government, leading political parties and managing the administration of a major European city. His journey from the sports arena to the halls of political power has made him a significant figure in modern history.

Before becoming a politician, Klitschko was a highly decorated combat sports athlete. He competed in amateur boxing, kickboxing, and sport karate simultaneously. In his amateur boxing career, he achieved 195 wins and 15 losses. He was a six-time kickboxing world champion, winning two amateur world championships and four professional tournament titles. In 1995, he won the super-heavyweight championship at the first World Military Games in Italy. He also earned a silver medal at the 1995 World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

Klitschko's professional boxing career began in 1996 after he finished his amateur career. He signed with the German-based company Universum Box-Promotion. He was extremely successful early on, winning his first 24 professional fights by knockout or technical knockout. He won the WBO heavyweight title in 1999 by defeating Herbie Hide. He also held the Ring magazine title and the WBC title twice between 2004 and 2013. In total, he won 15 world heavyweight title fights and completed 12 successful title defenses.

His career included intense rivalries and significant physical challenges. In 2000, he faced Chris Byrd, which resulted in his first professional defeat. Klitschko suffered a torn rotator cuff, a serious injury to the shoulder joint, which forced him to stop the fight.

He later fought Lennox Lewis in 2003 for the WBC and The Ring titles. During that match, a severe cut above Klitschko's eye caused a technical knockout victory for Lewis. Despite these setbacks, Klitschko remained a dominant force in the sport for many years.

Klitschko and his brother, Wladimir Klitschko, were both multiple world champions. Their period of dominance in the heavyweight division is widely known as the "Klitschko Era." In 2011, the brothers entered the Guinness World Records for having the most world heavyweight title fight wins. At that time, they had 30 wins between them, a number that grew to 40 by 2020.

This era showed how one family could influence the entire landscape of a professional sport.

Klitschko's transition to politics began formally in 2006 when he ran for mayor of Kyiv. In 2010, he founded a political party called the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform, known as UDAR. He was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament in 2012 through this party. He became a leading figure during the 2013–2014 Euromaidan protests, which were significant political demonstrations in Ukraine.

On May 25, 2014, he was elected as the Mayor of Kyiv. He has since been re-elected in 2015 and 2020, securing 50.52% of the vote in the 2020 local elections.

Beyond sports and politics, Klitschko is also a highly educated scholar. He holds a Doctoral Degree, or Ph.D., in Sports Science from Kyiv University. This academic background reflects his deep understanding of physical science and human movement. His ability to speak multiple languages and his articulate personality helped him succeed in both Germany and Ukraine. As mayor, he has overseen various urban projects, such as the reconstruction of the Rusanivets Stadium.
