Carlsen uses a specific approach to win his matches. As a teenager, he was known for an attacking style. Now, he is considered a universal player. This means he can adapt to many different types of games. He uses a wide variety of openings to start his matches. These openings make it difficult for opponents to prepare. This strategy also reduces the utility of computer analysis. Carlsen prefers the middlegame, which is the phase after the opening moves. He describes this part of the game as "pure chess."

Carlsen's influence extends to how the game is studied and played. His use of varied openings challenges the role of computer analysis. This forces players to rely more on their own skills. He has also participated in different formats like rapid and blitz. These formats require much faster thinking than classical chess.
