Donovan Phillips Leitch is a celebrated Scottish musician, songwriter, and record producer.

Born on May 10, 1946, in Maryhill, Glasgow, he became a major figure in the British folk scene. By the late 1960s, his music became a symbol of the "flower power" era. His sound was a unique blend of folk, pop, jazz, and psychedelia. This psychedelic style used swirling, dreamy sounds to create a specific mood. Donovan's work helped define the musical atmosphere of that decade.

Donovan's musical journey began with a deep study of different playing styles. He started playing the guitar at age 14 after being influenced by his family's love of folk music. While living in Torquay, Devon, he practiced busking, which is performing music in public spaces. He learned the crosspicking technique from local musicians like Mac MacLeod and Mick Softley. This technique involves a specific way of picking guitar strings to create complex rhythms. In 1968, Donovan shared a finger-picking guitar style with John Lennon. Lennon later used this specific style in famous songs such as "Dear Prudence" and "Julia."

His career moved through several distinct professional stages. He first gained recognition through live performances on the pop television series *Ready Steady Go!* in 1965. After signing with Pye Records, he recorded folk-style music for Hickory Records. His early hits included "Catch the Wind," "Colours," and "Universal Soldier." He later signed a $100,000 contract with Epic Records in the United States. This move allowed him to collaborate with producer Mickie Most. This partnership helped him transition from simple folk to more complex, international pop sounds.

Donovan's rise to fame involved significant legal and creative shifts. In 1966, a contract dispute between Pye Records and his new American label caused delays. During this hiatus, he traveled to Greece and wrote the song "Writer in the Sun." Once the legal issues were resolved, he recorded in Los Angeles. This era saw him embracing Eastern influences and West Coast psychedelic rock. He worked with arranger John Cameron to create lush, layered musical textures. These recordings helped him move past his early reputation as a folk singer.

His commercial success is measured by many high-ranking hits on the music charts. In September 1966, his single "Sunshine Superman" reached number one on the American Billboard Hot 100. The song sold 800,000 copies in just six weeks and eventually sold over one million. The accompanying album reached number 11 on the U.S. album charts.

Other major hits included "Mellow Yellow," which hit number two in the U.S. in 1966. His 1968 song "Hurdy Gurdy Man" reached the top five in both Britain and America. In May 1969, the song "Atlantis" reached number seven on the U.S. charts.

Donovan's recordings are notable for their diverse use of instruments and talented collaborators.

The *Sunshine Superman* album featured instruments like the sitar, tablas, harpsichord, and oboe. He worked with many musicians who would later become legends. For example, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham all played in his backing groups. These musicians later formed the famous rock band Led Zeppelin. Donovan also maintained close friendships with prominent artists like Paul McCartney and Brian Jones. He even contributed the lyric "sky of blue and sea of green" to the Beatles' song "Yellow Submarine."

Throughout his life, Donovan's influence has been recognized by the highest musical honors.
