Yusuf Islam is a highly successful British singer-songwriter and musician.

He is also widely known by his stage names, Cat Stevens or Yusuf / Cat Stevens. His musical career has spanned many genres, including folk, rock, pop, and Islamic music. He has achieved massive commercial success, selling over 100 million records. Additionally, his music has earned more than two billion streams. In 2014, his contributions to music earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has also received two honorary doctorates and various humanitarian awards for his work promoting peace.

His early life in London provided the foundation for his creative interests.

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou on July 21, 1948, he grew up in the Soho theatre district. His family operated a restaurant called the Moulin Rouge on Shaftesbury Avenue. As the youngest child of a Greek Cypriot father and a Swedish mother, he developed musical skills on a family baby grand piano. At age 15, he began playing the guitar after his father purchased one for £8. He also studied art at the Hammersmith School of Art. While he once considered a career as a cartoonist, he ultimately chose to pursue music.

Stevens's professional career began in the mid-1960s under the name Steve Adams. He eventually adopted the stage name Cat Stevens to be more memorable to fans. He believed the name would appeal to people in England and America because they loved animals.

His early singles were significant hits in the United Kingdom. The song "Matthew and Son" reached number 2 in the UK charts. His debut album, also titled "Matthew and Son," reached number 7. He also wrote "The First Cut Is the Deepest," a song that later became a hit for four different artists. This song earned him ASCAP songwriting awards in 2005 and 2006.

In 1969, a major health crisis changed the course of his life. Stevens contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized at King Edward VII Hospital. This serious illness led to a period of deep spiritual questioning. During his long convalescence, he explored meditation, yoga, and metaphysics. He also became a vegetarian and read about various religions. This period of reflection resulted in him writing approximately 40 songs. Many of these compositions would eventually appear on his future musical albums.

After recovering, Stevens sought more creative freedom in his musical production. He moved away from the heavy orchestration of his early work toward a folk rock sound. He signed with Island Records and began working with producer Paul Samwell-Smith.

He also collaborated closely with guitarist Alun Davies. Davies provided expert fingerwork and backing vocals for many recordings. This era produced massive successes like the album "Tea for the Tillerman" and "Teaser and the Firecat." Both of these albums were certified triple platinum in the United States.

His personal beliefs led to a significant departure from the pop music industry. In December 1977, Stevens converted to Islam and adopted the name Yusuf Islam. In 1979, he auctioned his guitars for charity. He left his mainstream musical career to focus on educational and philanthropic causes within the Muslim community. During this time, he produced music that met strict religious standards. He also faced controversy in 1989 regarding comments about the fatwa placed on author Salman Rushdie. Stevens later explained that he never supported the fatwa and was framed by certain questions.

In 2006, Yusuf Islam returned to the world of secular pop music.

He released "An Other Cup," his first new pop studio album in 28 years. Since then, he has released several more projects, including "Roadsinger" in 2009 and "Tell 'Em I'm Gone" in 2014. He also began touring the United States again in 2014. In 2017, he released "The Laughing Apple" and used the Cat Stevens name for the first time in 39 years. His recent work includes the 2023 studio album, "King of a Land."

His career demonstrates how art can evolve alongside a person's changing identity.

From a teen pop star in London to a dedicated philanthropist, his path has been unique. He has successfully bridged the gap between folk-rock stardom and religious devotion. His ability to reimagine his past, such as the 2020 release of "Tea for the Tillerman 2," shows his lasting connection to his musical roots. Through his songs and his activism, he continues to influence both the music industry and humanitarian efforts worldwide.
