Sir George Ivan "Van" Morrison is a celebrated musician, singer, and songwriter from Northern Ireland.

His career began in the 1960s and has spanned many decades. He is known for a unique musical style that blends different traditions. This style is often called "Celtic soul." It combines the structures of soul music and early rhythm and blues with the influences of jazz and Celtic tradition. His music can feel like a long, spiritual journey. Some critics have even described his performances as reaching a kind of "violent transcendence."

Morrison's musical foundation was built during his childhood in Belfast. He was born on August 31, 1945, to George Morrison and Violet Morrison. His father worked as a shipyard electrician. His mother was a former singer and tap dancer. His father owned one of the largest record collections in Northern Ireland. This collection included many genres like blues, gospel, jazz, folk, and country.

Young Van listened to artists such as Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, and Muddy Waters. He later credited these musicians as the inspiration for his own career. He even bought his first record by the blues musician Sonny Terry.

His journey into performing started as a young teenager. At age 11, he received his first acoustic guitar. He learned basic chords using a book called *The Carter Family Style*. In 1957, he formed a skiffle group named The Sputniks. This name was inspired by the Sputnik 1 satellite launched by the Soviet Union. As he grew, he expanded his skills to include the tenor saxophone. He took lessons from a local jazz musician named George Cassidy. Before finding full-time success in music, Morrison worked as a window cleaner. He later used this experience as inspiration for his songs "Cleaning Windows" and "Saint Dominic's Preview."

Morrison first gained international prominence as the lead singer of the Belfast R&B band, Them.

The band took its name from a 1954 horror film called * देम!*. They became famous for their energetic performances at the Maritime Hotel in Belfast. During these shows, Morrison would often improvise and create songs live on stage. The band recorded the song "Gloria," which became a famous garage band standard. Them toured the United States in 1966 and played at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles. During this time, the band even shared the stage with The Doors.

In 1967, Morrison began a highly successful solo career. His first major hit was the single "Brown Eyed Girl." Following this, he recorded the album *Astral Weeks* in 1968. Although it did not sell well at first, it is now considered a classic.

His 1970 album, *Moondance*, helped establish him as a major global artist. His work often uses "stream of consciousness" narrative, a style of writing that follows the flow of thoughts. This technique is a key part of the musical journeys found in his most acclaimed albums.

Morrison's commercial success is reflected in many impressive numbers. More than 40 of his albums have reached the UK Top 40. In the United States, 18 of his albums have reached the top 40. He has achieved top ten albums in the UK across four consecutive decades. Since turning 70 in 2015, he has remained very active. On average, he has released more than one album every year. This consistent output shows his deep dedication to his craft.

Throughout his life, Morrison has received many prestigious honors. He has won two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. He was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2017, he received the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting.
