Clapton's journey began with a difficult relationship with his first instrument. He was born in 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England. For his thirteenth birthday, he received an acoustic Hoyer guitar made in Germany. This steel-stringed instrument was inexpensive and quite hard to play. He briefly lost interest in music because of these challenges. However, he returned to the guitar two years later and practiced with great intensity. He used a portable Grundig reel-to-reel tape recorder to capture his practice sessions. He would listen to these recordings repeatedly until his playing reached his standards.

His professional career moved through several famous musical groups and styles. He joined the rhythm and blues band The Yardbirds in 1963. During this time, he developed a style influenced by Chicago blues players like B.B. King. He earned the nickname "Slowhand" while playing with The Yardbirds. This name came from fans performing a "slow handclap" while he replaced broken guitar strings.

After leaving The Yardbirds, he joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. He became famous for his work on the album *Blues Breakers – John Mayall – With Eric Clapton.* This record is often called "The Beano Album" because of its cover art.

In 1966, Clapton helped form the power trio Cream. This group included drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce. Cream was one of the earliest "supergroups" in music history. They were known for high-volume blues jamming and very long musical solos.

During this era, Clapton also used a brightly colored instrument known as "The Fool" guitar. This guitar was a symbol of the psychedelic rock era.

Later, he formed the band Blind Faith and the group Derek and the Dominos. His work with Derek and the Dominos produced the song "Layla," which remains one of his most famous works.

Clapton's musical output has spanned many different genres over several decades. He released the country-infused *Slowhand* album in 1977. In 1974, he recorded a cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." This version helped reggae music reach a much larger mass market. He also explored pop rock with his 1986 album, *August.* His ability to adapt to different styles helped him maintain a long and successful career. He continues to record music, including his 2024 studio album, *Meanwhile.*

Personal loss has also deeply influenced his songwriting and public life. Following the death of his son, Conor, in 1991, Clapton expressed his grief through music. He wrote the song "Tears in Heaven" to process this tragedy. The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
