His work has shaped many musical styles, including R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk, and jazz. He is celebrated for his technical skill and his ability to create cohesive musical albums. These albums often serve as socially conscious statements through complex musical compositions. Throughout his career, Wonder has remained a pioneer in the use of electronic musical instruments. He is recognized as one of the best-selling music artists in history, with over 100 million records sold worldwide.

Wonder’s musical process changed significantly during his peak years in the 1970s. He often functioned as a virtual one-man band during this era. He utilized synthesizers, which are electronic instruments that generate sound, to reshape the conventions of contemporary R&B.

By using these tools, he moved away from traditional sounds toward a keyboard-driven style. He also focused on the concept of the album as a unified work. Rather than just a collection of songs, his LPs were crafted to be consistent and cohesive. This approach helped drive many musical genres into the modern album era.

His career can be divided into distinct musical stages. The first stage was his time as a child prodigy with the Motown label. Under the name "Little Stevie Wonder," he became famous for high-pitched singing and energetic harmonica playing.

The second stage is known as his "classic period," which lasted from 1972 to 1976. During this time, he transitioned to a more sophisticated, synthesizer-heavy sound. This period included landmark albums such as *Music of My Mind*, *Talking Book*, and *Songs in the Key of Life*.

This era established him as a master of both technical innovation and deep, meaningful songwriting.

Wonder’s life began in Saginaw, Michigan, on May 13, 1950. He was born six weeks premature, a condition that led to retinopathy of prematurity. This disease affects the growth of the eyes and causes the retinas to detach, leaving him blind shortly after birth. Despite this, he showed immense talent at a very young age. He began playing the piano, drums, and harmonica early in his childhood. By age 11, he signed a contract with Motown's Tamla label.

At age 13, he became the youngest solo artist to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with his single "Fingertips."

The significance of his achievements is reflected in numerous awards and records. Wonder was the first Black musician to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He is also the only artist to win that specific award with three consecutive album releases.

His commercial success continued into the 1980s, with hits like "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and "Ebony and Ivory." He was the first act to top the Billboard Hot 100 in three different decades.

Beyond the recording studio, Wonder has used his platform for significant social and political influence. In 1980, he led a campaign to establish Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a federal holiday in the United States. His work extends to international diplomacy as well. In 2009, the United Nations named him a Messenger of Peace.
