William Everett Preston was a highly influential American musician. He was a talented keyboardist, singer, and songwriter. His musical expertise spanned several genres, including R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. Preston was known for his incredible versatility on various instruments. He played the piano, organ, clavinet, and several types of synthesizers. Because of his immense skill, he became a premier session musician in the 1960s. His contributions helped shape the sound of many famous musical eras. In 2021, he was officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Preston was a child prodigy who was entirely self-taught. He never received formal music lessons from a teacher. By age ten, he was already playing the organ on stage. He performed alongside famous gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson. At age eleven, he appeared on Nat King Cole's NBC television show. He sang the Fats Domino hit "Blueberry Hill" with Cole. In 1958, he even appeared in the biopic *St. Louis Blues*. In that film, he played the role of W.C. Handy at a younger age.

The Beatles showed immense respect for his talent. For their 1969 single "Get Back," they gave him a unique credit. The song was listed as "The Beatles with Billy Preston." This was the only time the band credited a co-performer after they became independent artists. His electric piano was very prominent on that track. He also contributed organ work to their 1969 album *Abbey Road*. These collaborations cemented his status as a vital part of the rock era.

Preston also achieved massive success as a solo artist. In 1972, he released the instrumental track "Outa-Space." This song helped popularize the clavinet, a keyboard instrument, in funk music. The track reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the Billboard R&B chart. Preston won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for this work. "Outa-Space" sold over 1 million copies in America. He received a gold disc from the RIAA in June 1972.
