Sir Richard Starkey, known globally as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor.

He achieved international fame as the drummer for the Beatles. While his primary role was percussion, he often sang lead vocals on one song per album. Famous examples include "Yellow Submarine" and "With a Little Help from My Friends." He also composed songs such as "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden." Starr is celebrated for a drumming style that prioritizes musical feel over technical virtuosity. This approach changed how many drummers view their role in a song's composition.

Starr's path to music began through significant health challenges during his childhood.

At age six, he suffered from appendicitis and peritonitis. This led to a coma and a twelve-month recovery in a hospital. Later, he spent two years in a sanatorium for tuberculosis. During his hospital stays, he was encouraged to join a hospital band to relieve boredom. He used a cotton bobbin as a makeshift mallet to strike bed cabinets. This early exposure to percussion sparked a lifelong devotion to the drums. He famously rejected other instruments, like the mandolin or banjo, because he only wanted to play the drums.

His early life in the Dingle district of Liverpool was marked by economic hardship.

His parents, Richard and Elsie, separated and divorced when he was very young. His mother worked various jobs, including as a barmaid, to support the family. Starr's education was also interrupted by his illnesses, leaving him illiterate at age eight. He eventually caught up academically through tutoring from a neighbor, Marie Maguire Crawford. Despite these struggles, he found musical inspiration in the skiffle craze. Skiffle was a genre that used improvised instruments to create driving rhythms. Starr even practiced by beating biscuit tins with sticks at home.

Starr's professional career evolved through several different musical groups. In 1957, he co-founded the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. He played primitive rhythms by raking a thimble across a washboard. On Christmas Day 1957, his stepfather Harry Graves gave him a second-hand drum kit. This kit included a snare, a bass drum, and a cymbal made from a rubbish bin lid. He later joined Rory Storm and the Hurricanes in 1959. In August 1962, he joined the Beatles, replacing drummer Pete Best.

This move placed him at the center of a global musical phenomenon.

Following the disbandment of the Beatles, Starr established a successful solo career. He released several hit singles, including the US top-ten hit "It Don't Come Easy." His songs "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen" both reached number one. In the UK, his single "Back Off Boogaloo" peaked at number two. His 1973 album, titled *Ringo*, was a major commercial success. It reached the top ten in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

Beyond music, Starr has maintained a diverse career in acting and broadcasting. He appeared in various films and documentaries throughout his life.

He also had a significant connection to children's television. Starr provided the narration for the first two series of *Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends*. He also played the character "Mr. Conductor" on the American spin-off, *Shining Time Station*. These roles allowed him to share his voice with a much younger audience.

Starr's influence on the art of drumming is measurable and widely recognized. He helped popularize modern techniques such as the matched grip. He also influenced how drummers tune their instruments, specifically by tuning drums lower. He frequently used muffling devices on tonal rings to achieve his specific sound. His impact earned him a place in the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2011, *Rolling Stone* readers ranked him as the fifth-greatest drummer of all time.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once as a Beatle in 1988 and again as a solo artist in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed a Knight Bachelor for his services to music.
