They are recognized as one of the most influential and enduring groups of the rock era. For over six decades, they have maintained a presence in global music. The band pioneered a gritty, rhythmically driven sound. This specific style helped define the genre of hard rock. They are celebrated for their longevity and their massive impact on popular culture.

The band's formation began with a musical connection between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. They met on October 17, 1961, at Dartford railway station in Kent.

Jagger was carrying records by Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. This shared interest in blues music sparked their partnership. They initially performed in a group called the Blues Boys. This quintet included Alan Etherington and Bob Beckwith. Eventually, they joined with Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, and Charlie Watts. Brian Jones acted as the primary leader during these early years.

As the band grew, they developed a professional structure and a unique image. Their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, played a vital role in their early direction. He encouraged the band to move away from playing cover versions. Instead, he pushed them to write original compositions. This shift led to international number-one hits like "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Paint It Black."

Oldham also crafted a rebellious image for them. He wanted them to contrast with the polished look of the Beatles. He promoted them as a threatening and unpredictable group. This helped them become icons of the 1960s counterculture.

The band's lineup has seen several significant changes over the decades. Brian Jones left the group in 1969.

He was replaced by guitarist Mick Taylor. In 1974, Taylor departed and was succeeded by Ronnie Wood. The band also saw changes in their rhythm section. Bill Wyman was the original bassist until his departure in 1993. Darryl Jones became the regular bassist following Wyman. After the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021, Steve Jordan became the regular drummer. These transitions allowed the core of the band to continue performing.

Recording technology and studio choices helped shape their iconic sound. The band often recorded at Regent Sound Studios. This facility used egg boxes on the ceiling for sound treatment. Oldham believed the studio allowed instruments to leak in a way that created a "wall of noise."

Their contract with Decca Records was also highly unusual for a new act. It provided them with full artistic control over their recordings. They also owned their recording master tapes. This independence was a major factor in their creative development.

The Rolling Stones have achieved massive commercial and critical success. They have estimated album sales exceeding 250 million copies.

Their live performances are also record-breaking. By 2007, they had broken the record for the highest-grossing concert tour three times. They were also the highest-earning live act of 2021. Their musical excellence has been recognized with four Grammy Awards. They also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Beyond individual songs, the band has left a lasting mark on the music industry. Their 1971 album, *Sticky Fingers*, featured their famous tongue and lips logo. This album was the first of eight consecutive number-one studio albums in the United States. They have remained a major concert attraction through large stadium and arena tours.

Even after 18 years without new material, they released *Hackney Diamonds* in 2023. This album became their fourteenth UK number-one album. Their work continues to be studied and ranked by major publications like *Billboard* and *Rolling Stone* as some of the greatest art of all time.
