They were famous for a unique musical style that merged several different genres. Their sound blended elements of rock with punk, reggae, and jazz. This combination helped them emerge as leaders within the British new wave scene. They were particularly significant during the Second British Invasion of the United States. The band achieved global popularity that lasted from the late 1970s until the mid-1980s.

The core musical unit of the band was a trio.

Sting served as the lead vocalist and played the bass guitar. He also acted as the group's primary songwriter. Andy Summers provided the guitar work and was a veteran of the music industry. Stewart Copeland performed on drums and percussion. This three-piece arrangement was somewhat unusual for the era. Most contemporary bands used larger lineups with extra support players. The specific chemistry of this trio allowed them to create more complex musical arrangements.

The formation of the band involved several specific steps and changes. In September 1976, Stewart Copeland met Sting through a music journalist in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sting moved to London in December 1976 and immediately sought out Copeland for a jam session. They originally formed the group with a guitarist named Henry Padovani. However, Sting found Padovani's abilities limited for the band's growing potential. After performing in a project called Strontium 90, Sting recruited Andy Summers. Summers insisted the band remain a trio. This led to Padovani's dismissal and the establishment of the classic lineup.

The trio performed their first show as a three-piece in Birmingham on August 18, 1977.

The band's early career was marked by both struggle and sudden success. Their debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, was released in 1978. It was recorded at Surrey Sound Studios with a very small budget.

The single "Roxanne" initially struggled to find a place on the radio. Some attributed this to the song's subject matter regarding prostitution. However, the song later became a major hit in both the UK and North America. Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc, released in 1979, was a massive success. It became the first of four consecutive studio albums to reach number one on the UK charts. This album included hit singles like "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon."

As the band progressed, they reached even greater commercial heights. Their third album, Zenyatta Mondatta, helped them achieve a breakthrough in the United States. It reached number five on the US Billboard 200 chart. Their final studio album was Synchronicity, released in 1983. This album reached number one in several countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, and the US. In the United States alone, Synchronicity sold over eight million copies. The lead single, "Every Breath You Take," became their only number one hit in America.

The legacy of The Police is supported by impressive statistics and honors. They have sold more than 75 million records throughout their career.

Their accolades include six Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Several of their studio albums have appeared on the Rolling Stones list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Even after disbanding in 1984, their impact remained strong. When they reunited for a world tour in 2007, it became the highest-grossing tour of that year. This made them the world's highest-earning musicians in 2008.

The band's influence extends into the broader history of modern music. They are recognized as one of the best-selling bands in history. Their ability to blend genres like reggae and jazz into a rock framework helped define the new wave era. They proved that a small, three-piece group could achieve massive global scale. Their work continues to be studied as a primary example of successful musical crossover.
