They were known for a unique sound that mixed different styles. Their music blended rock with punk, reggae, and jazz. This mix helped them become very popular around the world. They were leaders in the "Second British Invasion" of the United States. People loved their energy and their clever songs. The band stayed famous from the late 1970s until the mid-1980s.

The band's core group had three members. Sting played the bass and sang the lead vocals. He was also the main songwriter for the group. Andy Summers played the guitar and was a veteran of the music scene. Stewart Copeland played the drums and percussion.

They worked together as a trio for most of their history. This small group size was unusual for many rock bands of that time. Their teamwork helped them create many famous songs.

The band formed in London in 1977. Stewart Copeland met Sting through a music journalist in Newcastle upon Tyne. Sting moved to London in December 1976 and sought out Copeland. They first formed the band with a guitarist named Henry Padovani. Later, Andy Summers joined the group and became a permanent member.

This change made their music even more interesting. The trio we remember played their first show in Birmingham in August 1977.

Their first album was called Outlandos d'Amour, released in 1978. It included the famous song "Roxanne."

Their second album, Reggatta de Blanc, was a huge success in 1979. It was the first of four albums to reach number one in the UK. Other big hits included "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon." Their final studio album was Synchronicity in 1983. This album sold over eight million copies in the US alone. "Every Breath You Take" became their only number one hit in America.

The Police achieved many great things in their career. They sold over 75 million records in total.

They won six Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards. In 2003, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even after they stopped playing together in 1984, they reunited for a big tour in 2007. That tour was the highest-earning tour of that year. They remain one of the best-selling bands in history.
