The Smiths were a famous rock band from Manchester, England.

They formed in 1982 and became leaders in independent music. The group had four members: Morrissey on vocals, Johnny Marr on guitar, Andy Rourke on bass, and Mike Joyce on drums. Morrissey and Marr were the main songwriting team. They chose a sound based on guitars, bass, and drums. This was different from the synth-pop music that was popular then. People loved their music because it felt unique and honest.

Making their music involved a lot of hard work and practice. Morrissey and Marr first met at a concert in 1978. They bonded over their shared love of poetry and books. In 1982, Marr visited Morrissey's home to ask him to start a band. They held their first rehearsals in Marr's rented attic room in Bowdon. They practiced many songs, including "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle." They even recorded some early songs on a small four-track cassette recorder. This helped them find their special sound before they played for crowds.

History shows how the band grew from small rooms to big stages. Their first public performance was in October 1982 at the Ritz in Manchester. They were a support act for a group called Blue Rondo à la Turk. Later, they signed with an independent label called Rough Trade Records. This was a big step for their career in 1983. They worked with different producers to get their sound just right. Even when they were turned down by big companies like EMI, they kept going. They eventually signed with the American label Sire Records in late 1983.

The band achieved many big successes with their records. Their first album, *The Smiths*, came out in 1984 and reached number two. In 1985, their second album, *Meat Is Murder*, reached number one on the UK charts. This album included songs about being vegetarian and other political ideas. Their other albums, *The Queen Is Dead* and *Strangeways, Here We Come*, also did very well in Europe. Several of their singles reached the top 20 in the UK. These numbers show how many people truly cared about their music.

The Smiths' story is one of great skill and also some sadness. The band grew to five members briefly in 1986 with guitarist Craig Gannon. However, internal tensions caused the band to break up in 1987. This split led to public legal battles over money called royalties. Even though they stopped working together, they stayed famous. Many fans still listen to their songs today. Sadly, the band's bass player, Andy Rourke, passed away in 2023. Their music remains a huge part of British history.
