They are known for a smooth and soulful sound. Their music blends many different styles together. These styles include soul, smooth jazz, and quiet storm. They are also linked to a style called sophisti-pop. Many people love their music because it feels calm and elegant. This unique sound helped them become very successful around the world.

The band has a specific way of working together. The group includes lead singer Sade Adu. Paul Denman plays the bass guitar. Stuart Matthewman plays the saxophone and the guitar. Andrew Hale plays the keyboards and the piano. The band has not had a regular drummer since 1986. Instead, they use session musicians for their recordings and live shows. This helps them keep their special sound during performances.

The band began in 1982 in London. The members originally came from a Latin soul band called Pride. They formed a new group and named it after Sade Adu. Their first big performance was in December 1982 at Ronnie Scott's Club. In May 1983, they played their first show in the United States. This was at a place called Danceteria in New York City. They signed with CBS Records in October 1983.

Sade has achieved many great things in music history. Their first album, Diamond Life, was released in July 1984. It sold over four million copies and won a Brit Award. Their second album, Promise, came out in late 1985. It reached number one in both the UK and the US. By 2014, the band had sold 75 million records worldwide. They even won four Grammy Awards for their wonderful work.

You might recognize their music from movies or big events. In 1993, they recorded a song for the film Philadelphia. Their music also appeared in the film Indecent Proposal. Sade Adu performed at the famous Live Aid event in 1985. She was the only African-born artist to play for that huge crowd. Their songs have influenced many other artists in the neo-soul genre. They remain a very important part of music history today.
