The group started in 1988. It began with four members. These were Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles. They actually met in the early 1980s. They were part of a group called the Wild Bunch. This was a famous group of DJs in Bristol. Massive Attack grew out of that group. They even released a single called "Any Love" when they first started.

Making their music is a very creative way of working. They often use guest singers to help them. These singers include people like Horace Andy and Shara Nelson. They also use a style called sprechgesang. This is a way of speaking and singing at the same time. They also use sampling. This means they take pieces of other sounds to make new music. They even recorded famous songs at the Abbey Road studio. This helped them create a very famous sound.

Their first big album was called Blue Lines. It came out on April 8, 1991. Many people believe it was the first trip hop album ever. The song "Unfinished Sympathy" was a huge hit in Europe. Later, they released an album called Mezzanine in 1998. This was their most successful album. It sold nearly four million copies. It also had a famous song called "Teardrop." Both Blue Lines and Mezzanine are on lists of the greatest albums ever.

Over many years, the group has changed quite a bit. Some members left to work on their own projects. Tricky left in 1994 to be a solo artist. Mushroom left the band in 1999. Today, the group mostly includes 3D and Daddy G. They have released other albums like 100th Window and Heligoland. They have sold over 13 million albums all over the world. They have also won many awards, like the Brit Award for Best British Dance Act.
