Massive Attack is an influential English musical collective. They are widely credited with helping to define the trip hop genre. This style of music blends elements from hip hop, soul, and reggae. The group emerged from the vibrant club scene in Bristol, England. They are known for a creative production style that uses sampling. Sampling is the process of taking parts of existing sounds to create new music. They also use a vocal style called sprechgesang. This is a technique that sits between speaking and singing.

The group's origins trace back to the early 1980s. Members Grant "Daddy G" Marshall and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles were part of a DJ collective called the Wild Bunch. This group was a dominant sound system in the Bristol club scene. In 1988, Massive Attack formed as a spin-off quartet. The original lineup included Del Naja, Marshall, Thaws, and Vowles. They released their first single, "Any Love," while unsigned. This track was co-produced by the Bristol duo Smith & Mighty. It featured singer Carlton McCarthy using a falsetto voice.

In 1991, the group released their debut album, Blue Lines. This album is often called the first trip hop record. To create this sound, the band used many guest vocalists. These included Horace Andy and Shara Nelson. They also utilized the help of producer Jonny Dollar. The single "Unfinished Sympathy" became a major hit across Europe. It reached number one on the Dutch Top 40. The strings for this song were recorded at the famous Abbey Road studio. The group even briefly changed their name to "Massive" during the Gulf War to avoid controversy.

The band's lineup changed as they grew. Adrian "Tricky" Thaws left in 1994 to pursue a solo career. This departure caused some friction regarding his contributions to Blue Lines. In 1994, they released their second album, Protection. This album won a Brit Award for Best British Dance Act. During this era, the group began working with producer Neil Davidge. Davidge started as an engineer but soon became a key producer. The group also started their own label, Melankolic. This label followed a philosophy of non-interference for its artists.

By 1997, Robert "3D" Del Naja became the primary producer. This shift led to the creation of their third album, Mezzanine, in 1998. Mezzanine was their most commercially successful work. It sold nearly four million copies worldwide. The album featured the hit single "Teardrop," sung by Elizabeth Fraser. This album also won a Q Award for Best Album. However, internal disagreements led to more changes. Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles left the band in 1999. This left Del Naja and Marshall as a duo.

Massive Attack continued to record as a duo for several years. They released the album 100th Window in 2003. This record sold over one million copies. It featured collaborations with artists like Sinéad O'Connor and Mos Def. The group also worked on various film soundtracks. They provided music for films such as Danny the Dog and The Matrix. They have also scored films like Battle in Seattle and Trouble the Water. These projects allowed them to explore different musical textures.

The group's impact is measured by both sales and critical respect. They have sold over 13 million studio albums globally. Both Blue Lines and Mezzanine appear on the Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. They have earned multiple awards, including two MTV Europe Music Awards. Beyond music, the group is active in social causes. They support various political, human rights, and environmental movements. This commitment shows their connection to broader global issues.
