Gorillaz is an English virtual band that blends music with visual storytelling.

Created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, the project uses fictional characters to present its music. This concept allows the band to exist in a world of music videos, comic strips, and short cartoons. The band is defined by four main animated members. Murdoc Niccals plays the bass guitar. Noodle plays the guitar and keyboards. Russel Hobbs plays the drums. Damon Albarn provides the vocals and keyboards. While the characters are drawn, Albarn remains the only permanent musical contributor to the project.

The creation of Gorillaz began from a shared living situation in London. Albarn and Hewlett began sharing a flat in Westbourne Grove in 1997. They developed the idea for a virtual band while watching MTV. They felt that many manufactured boy bands on television lacked substance. They wanted to create a manufactured band that was actually interesting. The project originally went by the name "Gorilla." The visual style of the characters likely evolved from an earlier comic strip idea called The 16s. This blend of art and music allowed Albarn to explore new creative paths.

Musically, Gorillaz serves as a way for Albarn to explore diverse genres. Before this, Albarn was known for the Britpop sound of his other band, Blur. With Gorillaz, he found liberation through different rhythms. The music incorporates hip hop, electronic, dub, punk rock, and Latin music. To achieve these complex sounds, the band relies heavily on collaboration. For the debut album, Albarn worked with American hip-hop producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura.

This collaborative approach became a staple of the band's identity. They have worked with many different artists to expand their sonic range.

The band's early recording process involved multiple locations. Albarn recorded much of the first album at Studio 13 in London. He also recorded at Geejam Studios in Jamaica. The first major release was the EP *Tomorrow Comes Today* in 2000. This was followed by the self-titled debut album in 2001. The album featured the hit single "Clint Eastwood," which included contributions from Del the Funky Homosapien and Kid Koala.

The debut was a massive commercial success. It sold over 7 million copies worldwide and reached number three on the UK Albums Chart.

As the project grew, the albums took on different themes and sounds. The second album, *Demon Days* (2005), was produced by Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse.

This album was a major success, going six times platinum in the UK. It featured the hit single "Feel Good Inc." and had a darker tone. The third album, *Plastic Beach* (2010), focused on environmentalist themes and synth-pop. The fourth album, *The Fall*, was unique because it was recorded on an iPad during a tour. Later albums like *Humanz* and *Song Machine* continued to use a wide array of guest artists.

Performing Gorillaz live has required creative solutions to bridge the gap between animation and reality. In the early years, the touring band was often hidden from view.

They played behind a giant screen while computer graphics of the animated members were projected. Albarn found this difficult because he could not see the audience. Since 2010, the band has moved toward more traditional live touring. This features a fully visible live band on stage.

This allows the audience to see the real musicians performing the music.

Throughout its history, Gorillaz has earned significant critical and commercial recognition. The project has won a Grammy Award and several MTV Video Music Awards. They also won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards.

Their ninth studio album, *The Mountain* (2026), drew inspiration from India. This album received widespread critical acclaim. The band continues to connect music, art, and technology to tell stories. They remain a unique example of how a musical group can exist as a multimedia universe.
