Portishead is an influential English electronic band. They formed in Bristol in 1991. The group is known for a unique musical style. This style blends electronic beats with atmospheric sounds. Many people call this sound trip-hop. The band members include Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley. Gibbons provides the vocals and production. Barrow plays many instruments, including drums and synthesizers. Utley plays the guitar and bass. Sometimes, audio engineer Dave McDonald is called a fourth member. Their music is often described as having a cinematic quality.

Making their music involves several interesting techniques. In the beginning, Geoff Barrow used a method called sampling. He borrowed records from a local DJ named Andy Smith. Barrow took small parts of these recordings to use as loops. He combined these loops with hip-hop production styles. This created a sound that felt both modern and old. As the band grew, they changed how they worked. Their second album used more live instrumentation. This meant they played more instruments themselves instead of just using samples. By their third album, the sound became even rockier. They used more drums and heavy guitars to create a powerful effect.

The band's sound has distinct stages and characteristics. Their debut album, Dummy, is famous for its atmospheric and yearning feel. It sounds like a soundtrack for a spy film. Their second album, titled Portishead, sounds different. It is described as being grainier and harsher than their first work. The third album, Third, moved toward a rockier style. This version of their music was influenced by post-punk bands. It featured more prominent guitar and drum sounds.

The history of Portishead began in February 1991. Beth Gibbons and Geoff Barrow met during a coffee break. They were attending an Enterprise Allowance course in Bristol. They chose the name Portishead from their home town. Later, they met Adrian Utley at Coach House Studios. Utley heard their early recordings and began sharing musical ideas. This collaboration helped them record their first song, "It Could Be Sweet." By 1994, they released their landmark debut album, Dummy. This album helped define a whole new genre of music.

Success for the band came very quickly with their first album. Dummy was a major success in Europe and the United States. In the U.S., it sold over 150,000 copies before the band even toured there. The album won the Mercury Music Prize in 1995. It also produced three hit singles: "Numb," "Sour Times," and "Glory Box." Rolling Stone magazine even ranked Dummy at number 419 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Throughout their career, Portishead has performed in many notable ways. They released a live album called Roseland NYC Live in 1998. This album used orchestral arrangements of their songs. In 2008, their album Third gained massive attention online. It attracted 327,000 listeners on Last.fm in less than 24 hours. This was the first time the site released an album before its official date. The band has also headlined major events like the Glastonbury Music festival. They even curated their own music festivals called All Tomorrow's Parties. In 2016, they received an Ivor Novello Award for their contribution to British music.

Many different musical influences shaped the Portishead sound. They were inspired by New York hip-hop producers. These producers knew how to mix orchestral samples with heavy beats. The band also liked music from science fiction television programs. They were inspired by composers like Barry Gray. Utley has also mentioned the influence of spaghetti western soundtracks. These soundtracks often use very emotional music. Even the vocals are influenced by history. Many people compare Beth Gibbons's singing style to the legendary singer Billie Holiday. This mix of many styles is why their music remains so special.
