In 1991, Harvey formed the PJ Harvey Trio to pursue her own songwriting. The group consisted of Harvey on vocals and guitar, Rob Ellis on drums, and Ian Oliver on bass. They eventually replaced Oliver with Steve Vaughan. The trio released two major studio albums, titled Dry in 1992 and Rid of Me in 1993. While the band faced early challenges, such as a difficult debut in a village hall, they achieved international critical acclaim. The band eventually disbanded after touring with U2 in 1993.

Following the trio, Harvey transitioned into a successful solo career. She began exploring new sounds and frequent collaborations with various musicians. Since 1995, she has released ten additional studio albums. Her solo work often features musicians like Mick Harvey and Eric Drew Feldman. She has also worked extensively with the record producer Flood. This partnership helped her create a wide range of musical textures.
