She is recognized as a prominent figure in women's cinema. Her feature films frequently explore themes of rebellion and social outsiders. She often focuses on women in leading roles who exist on the edges of society. This approach has made her a respected voice in the global film industry. Her work is noted for exploring complex human experiences through a unique lens.

Campion's creative process was deeply shaped by her formal training in the visual arts. She earned a graduate diploma in painting from the Sydney College of the Arts in 1981. She also studied at the Chelsea Art School in London and traveled through Europe. She has cited the painter Frida Kahlo and the sculptor Joseph Beuys as artistic influences. Eventually, she felt that painting had limitations for the stories she wanted to tell. This dissatisfaction led her to transition into filmmaking, starting with her first short film, Tissues, in 1980.

Her career progressed through several distinct stages of production. She began with short films like Peel, which won the Short Film Palme d'Or in 1986. She then moved into television, directing an episode for the series Dancing Daze in 1986. Her first feature-length film was Sweetie, released in 1989. Following this, she directed major biographical and dramatic works. These included An Angel at My Table in 1990 and the widely acclaimed The Piano in 1993. Later works include The Portrait of a Lady (1996) and Bright Star (2009).

Campion's history is rooted in the New Zealand theatre scene. She was born in Wellington to Edith Campion, an actress and writer, and Richard M. Campion, a teacher and director. Her parents founded the New Zealand Players. Although she grew up around the dramatic arts, she initially chose a different path. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Victoria University of Wellington in 1975. She later moved to Australia to study at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, graduating in 1984.

Her professional significance is reflected in numerous prestigious awards and honors. She has received two Academy Awards and two BAFTA Awards. She also holds two Golden Globe Awards and two Palme d'Or awards. In 2016, she was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Her 2021 film, The Power of the Dog, received 12 nominations at the 94th Academy Awards. This included nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Notably, she became the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar without winning Best Picture.

Specific examples of her work demonstrate her ability to handle diverse formats. In 2013, she co-created the television miniseries Top of the Lake, which earned several Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She later produced a sequel titled Top of the Lake: China Girl in 2017. This second season was shot in Sydney and featured her daughter, actress Alice Englert. Her film Bright Star (2009) focused on the poet John Keats. Campion specifically chose to center the story on his lover, Fanny Brawne.

Campion's work connects to broader discussions regarding gender and representation in art. Her films often deal with gender politics, including female sexual power and social status. While some label her work as feminist, others argue that such a label may not fully capture the complexity of her characters. Filmmaker Xavier Dolan once noted that her film The Piano inspired him to write roles for women with "soul, will and strength." Her career continues to impact how stories about women are told in modern cinema.
