The members originally called themselves On a Friday. This name referred to their weekly rehearsal day. They were influenced by their music teacher, who introduced them to jazz and avant-garde music. In 1991, they signed a contract with EMI. At this time, they changed their name to Radiohead. They took the name from a Talking Heads song. Yorke explained that the name represents how people receive and respond to their environment.

Radiohead has achieved massive commercial and critical success. By 2011, the band had sold over 30 million albums globally. They have won six Grammy Awards and four Ivor Novello Awards. The group also holds five Mercury Prize nominations.
