Arctic Monkeys is an influential English rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002.

The group is composed of lead singer and guitarist Alex Turner, drummer Matt Helders, guitarist Jamie Cook, and bassist Nick O'Malley. O'Malley joined the group in 2006, replacing the original co-founder and bassist, Andy Nicholson. The band is historically significant for being one of the first musical acts to achieve major public attention via the internet. This occurred during the emerging "blog rock" era, a period that commentators suggest changed how new bands are promoted and marketed. Their success demonstrated that digital file-sharing could drive massive popularity without traditional advertising.

The band's early growth relied on a grassroots method of music distribution. They recorded a collection of 18 songs known as demos at 2fly studios in Sheffield.

These recordings were compiled into a collection called Beneath the Boardwalk. The band burned these songs onto CDs to give away for free at live performances. Fans then shared these files across the internet, which helped the band grow in popularity throughout the north of England. The name Beneath the Boardwalk originated when the first sender of these files used the location of the Boardwalk to classify them. The band expressed that they did not make these demos to earn money, but simply to ensure people could hear their music.

Arctic Monkeys' musical journey began with a focus on guitar-heavy indie rock. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released in 2006.

This album became the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history at that time, selling 363,735 copies in its first week. It surpassed the previous record held by the group Hear'Say. The band followed this with Favourite Worst Nightmare in 2007, which also reached number one. While later albums like Humbug and Suck It and See received positive reviews, they were considered slightly weaker by critics. The band eventually achieved massive international fame with their fifth album, AM, in 2013.

The band's lineup underwent a significant change following their initial rise to fame. After an intensive period of touring, original bassist Andy Nicholson left the group in 2006. He cited fatigue and the pressures of the band's sudden success as reasons for his departure. Nick O'Malley, who had previously served as a temporary bassist during a North American tour, was officially confirmed as the permanent replacement. This transition occurred shortly after the release of the EP Who the Fuck Are Are Arctic Monkeys?, which was criticized by some as a way to capitalize on their success. The band countered that they released frequent music to avoid the boredom of touring a single album for years.

The band has achieved extraordinary commercial success, particularly in the United States. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), their sales in the US alone exceed 30 million units. Their album AM was a global phenomenon, topping four Billboard charts and earning a 4× Platinum certification in the US. In the United Kingdom, they made history by becoming the first independent-label band to debut at number one with their first five albums. This level of success is reflected in their numerous accolades, including seven Brit Awards. They were the first band to win both Best British Group and British Album of the Year three separate times.

Artistic evolution has been a key part of the band's identity. Their sixth studio album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, released in 2018, marked a major departure from their earlier sound. Instead of the heavy guitar work found in their previous albums, this record was piano-oriented. Their seventh album, The Car, released in 2022, continued this trend of musical exploration. This album earned the band nominations for the Ivor Novello Awards and the Mercury Prize in 2023. It also secured their third Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, following their previous nomination for Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.

The legacy of Arctic Monkeys is cemented by their presence on prestigious musical lists. Both their debut album and the album AM are included in the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" by NME and Rolling Stone.

Their career connects the traditional era of record labels to the modern digital age of music discovery. By utilizing the internet and maintaining a DIY ethic through their early signing with the Domino label, they helped redefine the path to stardom. Their ability to shift from indie rock to piano-led compositions shows a commitment to artistic growth alongside their massive commercial achievements.
