They became a leading force in the garage rock revival and post-punk revival movements. The group consists of five members: lead singer and songwriter Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Their music is known for its specific energy and style. This style helped define a new era of rock music in the early 2000s. The band's influence remains significant in the modern music landscape.

The band's formation began with teenage friendships in Manhattan. Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, and Fabrizio Moretti started playing together while attending Dwight School. They later added Nikolai Fraiture, a close childhood friend of Casablancas. In 1998, Albert Hammond Jr. joined the group after reconnecting with Casablancas. Hammond Jr. and Casablancas had previously attended the Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland. This final addition completed the lineup that would achieve international fame. The members spent years practicing and performing in New York City clubs.

To build their sound, the band practiced almost every night. Many of these rehearsals took place at The Music Building in Midtown Manhattan. They performed at various rock clubs, including the Luna Lounge and the Mercury Lounge. A young booker named Ryan Gentles eventually became the band's manager. In 2000, the group worked with producer Gordon Raphael to create a demo. This became the The Modern Age EP. This recording sparked a massive bidding war among record labels.

The band's first major success was the album Is This It, released in 2001. The album was produced by Gordon Raphael. It saw different release schedules in Australia, Japan, the UK, and the US. In North America, RCA Records changed the album cover and some lyrics. The original cover featured a photograph by Colin Lane. The North American version replaced it with an image of particle collisions. RCA also replaced the song "New York City Cops" with "When It Started." This change occurred due to the song's lyrics following the September 11 attacks. Despite these changes, the album received massive critical acclaim. It appeared on many "greatest albums" lists and won top honors from publications like Entertainment Weekly.

Following their debut, the band released several more albums with varying levels of success. In 2003, they released Room on Fire, which was also produced by Gordon Raphael. This album reached gold status and featured the single "12:51." In 2006, they released First Impressions of Earth, produced by David Kahne. This album reached number one in the UK and number four in the US. After a five-year hiatus, the band returned with Angles in 2011 and Comedown Machine in 2013.

These later albums saw positive reviews but lower sales compared to their early work.

A major career resurgence occurred with the release of The New Abnormal in 2020. This was their first studio album in seven years. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and released through Cult and RCA. Critics described the album as a "return to form." It was highly successful and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. This victory highlighted the band's lasting relevance in the music industry.

The history of The Strokes shows how dedication and style can shape music history. They moved from playing small Manhattan venues to headlining major international festivals. Their music connects to older genres and influences, such as the work of The Doors and the Velvet Underground. While they have experienced periods of inactivity, their impact on the garage rock revival is well-documented. Their journey from school friends to Grammy winners is a significant part of modern rock history.
