The White Stripes were a highly influential American rock duo.

Formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1997, they became leaders of the 2000s indie and garage rock revivals. The group consisted of Jack White and Meg White. Jack provided vocals and played the guitar, keyboards, and piano. Meg focused on drums, percussion, and vocals. Their music was defined by a unique melding of garage rock and blues influences. They embraced a raw simplicity in their composition, arrangement, and performance styles. This approach helped them stand out in a crowded musical landscape.

To achieve their signature sound, the duo utilized a low-fidelity approach to writing and recording. This means they often avoided overly polished or modern production techniques. For their fourth album, Elephant, Jack White used antiquated equipment. This included a duct-taped 8-track tape machine and recording gear from before the 1960s.

They often recorded in ways that felt personal and unrefined. Their second album, De Stijl, was actually recorded on an 8-track analog tape inside Jack's living room. This method preserved the energy of their performances. It ensured their music maintained a sense of directness and power.

The band's discography followed a path of increasing complexity and experimentation. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1999 and was dedicated to the Mississippi Delta blues musician Son House. Their second album, De Stijl, drew its name from a Dutch art movement.

The third album, White Blood Cells, released in 2001, brought them significant commercial success. This was followed by Elephant in 2003, which was their major label debut. In 2005, they released Get Behind Me Satan, an album where they experimented extensively. Finally, they released Icky Thump in 2007, which returned them to their blues roots. Each stage showed a different side of their musical identity.

The history of the band began in the Detroit music scene. Jack White, then known as Jack Gillis, met Meg White at a restaurant called Memphis Smoke.

He was a regular there, often reading his poetry during open mic nights. The pair married in 1996, and Jack eventually took Meg's surname. Interestingly, Meg had only been learning the drums for two months before their first concert. They played their first live show on August 14, 1997, at the Gold Dollar bar in Detroit. They initially considered the name Bazooka and Soda Powder before choosing The White Stripes.

The significance of the band is reflected in their massive commercial and critical achievements. White Blood Cells reached Gold status by selling over 500,000 albums.

The album Elephant achieved double platinum certification in Britain and platinum certification in the United States. Their hit single "Seven Nation Army" became a famous sports anthem. By the end of the 2000s, they had earned thirteen entries on the UK singles chart. They also earned eleven entries on the US Alternative Airplay chart. These numbers demonstrate their wide reach across different countries and radio formats.

Beyond their music, the duo was known for a very specific aesthetic and mysterious public image. They utilized a strict color scheme of red, white, and black.

This palette appeared on every single album and single cover they ever released. They also possessed a noted fascination with the number three. This dedication to design made their visual identity as recognizable as their sound. Their selective media appearances, such as in the film Coffee and Cigarettes, added to their unique presence in popular culture.

The White Stripes' legacy is cemented by numerous prestigious accolades and industry recognitions. They won six Grammy Awards from eleven total nominations.

Their album White Blood Cells is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "200 Definitive Albums." Rolling Stone named Elephant as one of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." In 2025, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Additionally, Billboard ranked them as the 33rd best rock band of all time in 2025. Their influence continues to connect the traditions of blues and garage rock to modern audiences.
