The band consisted of Jack White and Meg White. Jack played the guitar, keyboards, and piano while also singing. Meg played the drums and other percussion instruments. They were leaders in the garage rock and indie rock movements of the 2000s. Their music was known for being raw and simple.

They mixed the sounds of blues with garage rock. This style made their music feel very powerful and energetic.

To make their music, the duo used a low-fidelity approach. This means they often used older or simpler ways of recording. For their album Elephant, Jack used an old 8-track tape machine. He even used gear that was held together with duct tape.

They preferred a stripped-down sound rather than something very polished. This way of working helped them keep their music feeling real. They focused on simple arrangements and performances. This helped them stand out from other big rock bands.

Jack and Meg first met at a restaurant called Memphis Smoke. Jack used to read his poetry there during open mic nights.

They married in 1996 and started a band together. Meg only started learning the drums two months before their first concert. Their very first live show was on August 14, 1997. It took place at the Gold Dollar bar in Detroit. They originally thought about calling themselves Bazooka and Soda Powder. Instead, they chose the name The White Stripes.

Their music became a huge success during the early 2000s. Their third album, White Blood Cells, was released in 2001. This album helped them become very famous in the garage rock scene. In 2003, they released their fourth album called Elephant. This album won them their first Grammy Awards. It included the song "Seven Nation Army," which became a famous anthem for sports.

The band was very famous for its unique look and style. They used a simple color scheme of red, white, and black.

They used these same three colors for every single album and cover. They also had a big fascination with the number three. After a long break, the band officially dissolved in 2011. However, their impact on music lasted a long time. They were even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025.

Billboard even named them the 33rd best rock band of all time in 2025.
