R.E.M. was a famous American rock band that changed how people heard music.

They were leaders in a style called alternative rock. Many other bands, like Nirvana and Pixies, called them pioneers of this genre. The group was special because of how each member played. Peter Buck used a bright, "jangle" style on his guitar.

Michael Stipe sang with a unique voice and wrote mysterious lyrics. Mike Mills played bass lines that moved against the melody. Bill Berry provided tight and steady drumming. Together, they created a sound that felt new and exciting to many listeners.

Making their music involved a lot of hard work and specific choices. In the early days, the band practiced in a church in Athens, Georgia.

They wanted a sound that felt timeless. To do this, they avoided common rock clichés like long guitar solos or loud synthesizers. For their first album, Murmur, they worked with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon.

They often recorded in ways that felt natural, like during soundchecks. This helped them keep their unique musical identity as they grew.

The band started in 1980 while they were students at the University of Georgia.

Peter Buck and Michael Stipe met at a record store called Wuxtry Records. They realized they liked the same kind of music. They soon met Bill Berry and Mike Mills, who had played music together since high school. The group chose the name "R.E.M." at random from a dictionary. Some people thought it stood for rapid eye movement during sleep. Others thought it was a nod to a photographer named Ralph Eugene Meatyard.

As the years passed, the band achieved huge success around the world. They released many famous albums, including Out of Time in 1991.

Their hit song "Losing My Religion" became their best-selling single. By the mid-1990s, they signed a massive contract with Warner Bros. Records worth $80 million. This was the most expensive recording contract ever made at that time. The band also used their fame to speak about the environment and politics. They eventually sold more than 90 million albums to fans everywhere.

Even when things changed, the members stayed connected to their music. Bill Berry left the group in 1997 for health reasons.

The remaining three members continued as a trio with help from other musicians. In 2007, the whole band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
