They were leaders of the grunge scene in Seattle. Many people call them the face of Generation X. Their music is known for using big contrasts. They often played quiet verses followed by very loud, heavy choruses. This style helped them become a global phenomenon. People still listen to their songs and find meaning in them today.

Making their music involved a lot of hard work and change. The band started with a punk look and mixed pop melodies with loud noise. They often sang about feeling alone or having social struggles. In the beginning, they worked with small, independent record labels. They released their first album, Bleach, in 1989 through a label called Sub Pop. Later, they moved to a much larger label named DGC Records. This move helped them reach many more listeners around the world.

The band's history began in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic met at Aberdeen High School. They were friends who liked the same music. Before they were Nirvana, they tried several other band names. These included Skid Row, Bliss, and Ted Ed Fred. They finally chose the name Nirvana because Cobain wanted something beautiful. It was a change from the mean names used by other punk bands.

Nirvana had several different drummers before finding the right fit. They worked with musicians like Chad Channing for a time. In 1990, they met Dave Grohl and knew he was right immediately.

It even helped end the popularity of a style called hair metal. The band also released an album called In Utero in 1993.
