It captures a style of music that is very fast and loud. Most of the songs are quite short and move with a high energy. Many tracks have a tempo of over 160 beats per minute. This fast pace makes the music feel very exciting to listen to. The album is known for its raw and direct sound. It helped shape new styles of music like grunge and heavy metal. People today still view it as a very important record.

The band recorded the tracks in only seven days. They spent a total of $6,400 to finish the project. They used a studio called Plaza Sound to do the work. To get the sound right, they used special microphone placements. They also used a technique called overdubbing to add extra sounds. This means they recorded a new sound on top of an old one. They even used doubling, where a singer performs a line twice.

The story of the album began with a magazine editor. Lisa Robinson saw the band playing in New York City. She wrote articles about them in magazines like *Hit Parader*. She helped the band find a manager named Danny Fields. Later, producer Craig Leon helped the band get a contract. He showed their demo to Seymour Stein at Sire Records. Stein decided to sign the band to the label. This was a big deal because the label usually signed different kinds of bands.
