This record was her first studio album. It is known for mixing rock music with the power of poetry. Smith wanted to make poetry feel more vibrant and alive. She hoped the music would help people feel less alone. The title *Horses* represented her wish to recharge the spirit of rock music. She felt the music needed to start moving again.

The music on the album has a very specific sound. It uses a style called minimalism, which means it relies on simple things. The band used simple chord progressions to build their songs. However, they did not follow all the rules of punk rock. They used improvisation, which is when musicians make up parts as they play. Some songs even sound like jazz or reggae. Smith's singing changes between singing and speaking. This helped blend the lines between music and spoken poetry.

Smith and her band became popular in the New York City underground scene. They played many shows at a famous club called CBGB.

A music executive named Clive Davis saw her perform there. He offered her a deal with his new label, Arista Records, in April 1975. Smith chose to work with a producer named John Cale. Cale was a musician who used to be in the Velvet Underground. He helped the band record at Electric Lady Studios in September 1975.

Recording the album was not always easy for the group. Smith and Cale often clashed because they had different ideas. Cale wanted more arranged music with many layers. Smith and her band preferred a spontaneous style like their live shows. They even had a physical fight during the very last session on September 18.

Despite these hard moments, the album turned out very well. It reached the top 50 on the Billboard 200 chart. Music critics gave the album very high praise.

The songs on *Horses* tell many different kinds of stories. Some lyrics come from Smith's own life and her family. She wrote about growing up in poverty in New Jersey. Other songs are about dreams or famous people from the past. For example, "Elegie" is a tribute to the musician Jimi Hendrix. "Break It Up" was inspired by a dream about Jim Morrison. Because it is so important, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in 2009. It is now kept in the National Recording Registry as a significant work of art.
