An opera is a large stage show where singers perform a story. This specific work is about President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to the People's Republic of China. It is a way for people to look at history through music and drama. The creators wanted to show how historical events can become like legends or myths. This makes the story feel very important and grand to the audience.

Making the music for this show was a big job for the composer, John Adams. He wanted to create many different sounds to match the story. He added a large section of saxophones to the orchestra. He also used many percussion instruments and electronic synthesizers. The music does not stay in just one style. It mixes jazz and big band sounds from the 1930s. It also uses styles that sound like famous composers from the 1800s.

The idea for the opera began in 1983. A director named Peter Sellars asked John Adams to write it. Adams was unsure at first because he had never written an opera. He eventually agreed to work with Alice Goodman, who wrote the words, known as the libretto. They met at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in 1985. They studied six different characters to make them feel like real people. They wanted to show the true personalities of the leaders.
