Many people call him one of the most important music makers of the late 1900s. He is known for a style called minimalism. This style uses repetitive phrases that repeat over and over. These sounds build up in different layers to create new feelings. He even started his own group called the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968.

His music works by using patterns that shift slowly. He describes his own work as music with repetitive structures. This means the sounds stay similar but change in small ways. He learned a lot about rhythm while working with Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha. They showed him how Indian music uses additive rhythms. This helped him create a new way to think about time in music.
